Loden Dager/Arm + Hammer

What a better way to spend Valentine's Day than watching a great collection of menswear and falling madly in love with one of New York's most wonderful (and generally unknown - especially to me) spaces.  Loden Dager held their Fall 2009 show at the incredible headquarters of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen.  Founded in 1785 to provide cultural, educational and social services to families of skilled craftsmen, the society's HQ on 44th Street (across from the Algonquin) includes a library, atrium-like retractible roof five stories up and a museum of locks and old-school gadgets.  Above: the General Society's arm and hammer motif.

The muted colors were simple and great, stuff guys would actually wear...and most of the models looked like modern-day Tintins.

Upstairs at the museum.

Truly a place right up your alley...

That is so beautiful...how on earth did you find this place? Other than the Algonquin, I've always thought of that neighborhood as such a lost cause...

Especially enjoyed the photos of the stairway and the embroidery. There just isn't enough craftmanship like that anymore.

Reminds me of a sort of rough-around-the-edges verion of the Boston Athenaeum.

thank you for the intro to the general society of mechanics and tradesmen! the arm and hammer motif is very handsome. a museum of locks and old-school gadgets...very coool.

love loden dager! porter's images are fantasic. i read in the times or maybe it was a tim blanks review of the show that they were inspired by cy twombly, robert rauschenberg, and jasper johns for this collection. loden dager wondered what the three artists would have worn when they arrived in nyc in the 1950's?! that's brilliant.
