Windsor Chic: The Ski Sweater

My new
Rugby ski sweater. Inspired by the Duke, perfect for hot toddy sipping and Christmas party attending.

Windsor Chic: The Fair Isle Sweater

Oh, the Duke of Windsor…Prince of Wales and WASP fashion (I suppose the two go hand in hand, but he did it best and with the greatest gravitas). Two Winsdor references fell upon me this weekend. The first in GQ’s Man of the Year issue which advises that, yes, stylish men can wear fair isle sweaters (of course!). The Duke threw one on for a quick round of golf in the ‘20s and caused a sensation. As the wonderful tells it:

It was the Prince who, when he donned a brilliantly hued Fair Isle Sweater knitted for him in the Shetlands, led the weavers of that locale out of the darkness into international limelight. Though he wore the sensational sweater for only a single hour on the links at St. Andrews, Shetland weaving trade jumped over a million dollars a year. University undergraduates at Nebraska and Illinois subscribed, without a second thought, to monastic diets to corral funds enabling the purchase of these rather gaudy pullovers.

The second popped up on CBS Sunday Morning’s feature on Jeffrey Banks and Doria de La Chapelle’s new homage to check: Tartan: Romancing the Plaid. The Duke, a true tartan fan, also caused a splash with his check trunks one summer.

Technology: Crosley USB Turntable

It's not only vintage-chic, but this Crosley record player converts your vinyl to digital files (yes, heresy for a true LP fanatic). But for $149.95 it's a nice backup system! You're not gonna blow the neighbor's ears with this puppy (at least without external speakers), but it's quite fun to have around.

19th c. Chic: Doretta Strike Plate

Saw this great strikeplate in Italian Vanity Fair. Designed by Phoebe Helmbold. She's also done a quite lovely European wall socket that sells for 210 Euros. For more (limited info,

Science Lab Chic: Damien Hirst at Lever House

After a business breakfast at Brasserie, my colleague and I popped over to Lever House to check out Damien Hirst's $10 million commission, "School: The Archaeology of Lost Desires, Comprehending Infinity, and the Search for Knowledge." What an oddly beautiful installation. All those jaded New Yorkers didn't even blink at the main window's two sides of cow hanging on meat hooks over a flying, caged white dove and nicely distressed leather chair (all in a tank of formaldehyde). The anglophile in me loved that all of the sheep carcasses are stamped with "U.K." The medicine cabinets that line the walls would be perfect in a kitchen or bathroom (those autopsy tables would be nice, too).

Deco Chic: Watercolored Envelope Liner

Not necessarily my greatest work of art, but I've always loved this simple art deco design that I painted for the lining of a wedding invitation. Used it for my business card about a year ago.

Goyard Tote with Stripes

My customized Goyard tote finally returned from Paris. I expected the purple to be more of an eggplant, but love this lighter version just as much. Supposedly, the Goyard rep at Barney's liked the color combination so much that she's ordered the painted black with brown trim versions for the store with the same colors! Will report back when I see them on the shelves. Just note -- my stripes came first!

Rainy Day Chic: Rubber Dressage Boots

Nothing beats a traditional Hunter Wellie for tredging through muck, except maybe French two-tone dressage boots made from PVC. I've seen a few very chic girls wearing the solid black version with leggings on rainy days, but these take the WASPiness up a notch. Available at Cowboy Center for $190 a pair.

A TREMENDOUS Surprise!!!

A tremendous, overwhelmingly flattering surprise greeted me in my inbox this morning. The wonderful Patrick Callery sent over couple Christine Zehner portraits – of me! Note the fabulously hip paper source, as well. I’m flattered beyond belief.
